Twelve and a Half Billion by 2026? Judging Lululemon's Vision, Objectives and Strategy

Introduction

Thompson et al. (2018) describe strategy making as a sequence of related tasks: developing a strategic vision, mission and values; setting objectives; crafting a strategy to achieve them; executing it; and evaluating performance and adjusting. This case analysis applies the first three tasks, and the test of whether a strategy is working, to lululemon athletica, the maker of technical athletic apparel, at the end of its 2025 fiscal year, a year in which strong international growth coincided with weakness at home and a change of chief executive.

Vision, Purpose and Values

Lululemon's stated vision is to create transformative products and experiences that build meaningful connections, unlocking greater possibility and wellbeing for all, and its purpose is to elevate human potential by helping people feel their best (Lululemon Athletica Inc., 2026). Its core values include personal responsibility, courage, connection and inclusion, and fun. The textbook's criteria for an effective vision ask whether it is graphic, directional, focused, flexible, feasible, desirable and easy to communicate.

The statement does well on desirability and ease of communication, and its emphasis on wellbeing fits the brand. It is weaker on focus and direction: it does not say which customers, products or markets the company will pursue, so it could describe a meditation app as easily as an apparel company. That vagueness matters less while the company is growing on all fronts and more when choices must be made. Bart et al. (2001) found that mission statements affect performance mainly through their influence on employee behavior and organizational alignment, which depends on the statement being specific enough to guide decisions.

Objectives

In April 2022, lululemon announced its Power of Three x2 plan, setting objectives to double its 2021 revenue of $6.25 billion to $12.5 billion by 2026, to double men's and digital revenue and to quadruple international revenue (Lululemon Athletica Inc., 2022). These are the kind of objectives the textbook recommends: specific, quantified and time-bound, combining financial targets with strategic ones about market position. Locke and Latham (2002), summarizing decades of goal-setting research, concluded that people given hard, precise targets outperform those simply urged to try their best, which supports this approach.

Is the Strategy Working?

The textbook suggests judging a strategy by trends in revenue and profit, market position, and whether the company is meeting its objectives.

MeasureFiscal 2024Fiscal 2025Change
Net revenue ($ millions)10,58811,103+5%
Americas revenue ($ millions)7,9287,847-1%
China Mainland revenue ($ millions)1,3611,755+29%
Rest of world revenue ($ millions)1,2991,501+16%
Operating income ($ millions)2,5062,211-12%
Operating margin23.7%19.9%-380 basis points

The evidence is mixed. International markets are growing quickly, and their share of revenue rose from about 25 to 29 percent, which suggests the international objective is on track. But the Americas, still about 71 percent of revenue, declined, with comparable sales down 3 percent on lower traffic, conversion and order values. Operating margin fell 380 basis points, mainly because of higher U.S. tariffs and the end of the de minimis exemption on low-value imports (Lululemon Athletica Inc., 2026). Reaching $12.5 billion in 2026 would require growth of about 13 percent after 5 percent in 2025. Meanwhile the chief executive stepped down at the end of January 2026, interim co-chief executives were appointed, and the company disclosed that certain stockholders had publicly questioned its strategic direction, leadership and governance.

Recommendation

The board should treat the 2026 revenue target as unlikely and replace it with objectives that address the current problem: returning the Americas to comparable sales growth, rebuilding operating margin toward 22 percent through sourcing and pricing as tariff effects settle, and sustaining international growth. The vision should be supplemented with a short statement of strategic focus naming the core customer and categories, so that a new chief executive and employees can make consistent choices. The trade-off is reputational: abandoning a well-publicized target signals that the plan fell short, but holding to an unrealistic objective would weaken the credibility of every future target.

Strategy Elements Behind the Results

The textbook describes a strategy as the set of competitive moves and business approaches a company uses to compete, grow and run its operations. Lululemon's strategy combines product innovation in technical fabrics, a premium price position, company-operated stores that double as community spaces, a large digital business and expansion abroad. The 2025 results suggest that the elements are not equally healthy. Innovation and premium pricing depend on customers seeing new styles as worth full price, and lower conversion and order values in the Americas point to weaker newness or growing competition from newer athletic brands. International expansion, by contrast, is working as designed, with comparable sales in China Mainland up 20 percent. A new chief executive will need to decide whether the Americas problem lies in product, in marketing or in the store experience, and the objectives recommended below are designed to measure each.

Conclusion

Lululemon's vision inspires but does not focus, its 2022 objectives were well constructed, and its strategy is working abroad but not in its home market. Resetting objectives around the Americas and margins, and sharpening the strategic focus, would give the next chief executive a clearer mandate.

BUS 4210 Module 1 instructions, in plain terms

BUS-4210 requires seven case study assignments, worth 35 percent of the grade together, along with eleven discussions, a proctored midterm on Modules 1 to 4, an e-proficiency profile and a final analytical report to a chief executive. The first assignment covers vision, mission, objectives and strategy from Thompson, Peteraf, Gamble and Strickland. Evaluate the company's statements against the textbook's criteria rather than paraphrasing them, assess whether its objectives are specific and measurable, and test whether the strategy is working with financial and market evidence. End with a recommendation addressed to the company's leaders, and cite the annual report. Use segment data where the company reports it, since averages can hide where a strategy is failing.

How the BUS 4210 Module 1 example is put together

The analysis follows the textbook's sequence of strategy-making tasks. It quotes the vision and purpose and tests them against named criteria, noting both strengths and weaknesses, with research on how mission statements affect performance. The objectives section shows why the 2022 targets are well constructed, supported by goal-setting research. A table of segment and margin figures provides the evidence for judging the strategy, and the interpretation separates what is working from what is not. The recommendation is specific about new objectives and names its trade-off. The conclusion summarizes the judgment of each element in one sentence apiece. Read it for how evidence turns into a judgment about each element of strategy. Note the table.

Where the marks sit in the BUS 4210 Module 1 rubric

Each BUS-4210 case study receives a percentage mark. Mentors look for accurate application of the textbook's frameworks, analysis supported by the company's financial and market data, and a clear judgment about whether the strategy is working. Summarizing the case earns little; evaluating it earns most. Recommendations should follow from the analysis, be specific and acknowledge trade-offs. Current, cited evidence from annual reports and research beyond the textbook strengthens the paper. Clear organization, a table where data are compared, accurate references and economical prose finish the paper, reflecting the capstone's expectation of integrated analysis. Balanced evaluation that credits strengths before weaknesses earns particular credit from mentors.

Common BUS 4210 Module 1 mistakes, and how to avoid them

Students often restate a company's mission and praise it, or list financial figures without drawing a conclusion. Our writers can prepare BUS 4210 case study assignments on the case your module assigns or a company you choose. Read the business description and management's discussion in the latest annual report. Test the vision against the textbook's criteria one by one, and check whether stated objectives are measurable and dated. Then build a short table of revenue, profit and segment trends, decide whether the strategy is working, and recommend what leaders should change, including what it costs them. Finally, check every figure against the annual report before submitting. Then proofread.
