What GSM-7300 is really about
The course is built on Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson and Harrison’s Strategic Management: Competitiveness and Globalization, whose model moves from strategic inputs, the external environment and the firm’s internal resources and capabilities, through strategic actions at the business, corporate and international levels, to the governance, leadership and control systems that carry strategy out. Module 1 introduces that process. Module 2 covers business-level strategies, such as cost leadership and differentiation, and competitive rivalry. Module 3 examines mergers, acquisitions and international strategy, Module 4 cooperative strategies and corporate governance, Module 5 strategic leadership and organizational controls, and Module 6 strategic entrepreneurship and the future of strategy.
Because it is a graduate course, GSM-7300 expects analysis of real firms with current evidence. A paper on acquisition strategy should examine an actual deal, its rationale and what happened afterward; a paper on governance should consider a real board’s decisions. Annual reports, filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and business press provide the facts, and the textbook provides the frameworks to interpret them. Students who work in large organizations can also apply the concepts to their own employers, which makes the final paper especially useful.
What GSM-7300’s assessments ask for
Six written assignments, worth 40 percent of the grade together, address topics from each module. Six discussions and two synchronous events add debate, and a final paper worth 30 percent integrates the course’s concepts in an analysis of a firm’s strategy. Expect prompts that ask you to apply a framework, such as the five forces, the resource-based view or international entry modes, to a specific company and to recommend a strategic action with reasons.
Where students lose points in GSM-7300
The most common loss is describing a company’s history instead of analyzing its strategy. Mentors want the framework applied: which forces shape the industry’s profitability, which resources give the firm an advantage and whether they are valuable, rare, costly to imitate and organized to capture value. Another frequent weakness is ignoring evidence of results; an acquisition paper should ask whether the deal created value. Finally, recommendations often lack trade-offs. Every strategic choice gives something up, and naming what is given up shows strategic thinking.
