What ETH-5900 is really about
Readings come from two open textbooks on business ethics and on corporate conduct, by Byars and Stanberry and by Jimenez and Pulos, and students also watch a documentary about the fall of Enron. The course runs five modules: Perspectives on Ethics; Morality, Ethics, and Law; Economics, the Environment, and Technology; A World of Ethics; and The Future of Ethics.
A live Edison Live session falls in the first three weeks, and the final project asks students to analyze any legal or ethical issue in the news, evaluate how well at least two ethical frameworks apply and propose an approach that could prevent such issues.
What ETH-5900’s assessments ask for
Five written assignments carry 35 percent, seven discussions 30 percent, the news-issue final project 25 percent and the Edison Live session 10 percent. Written work is expected to apply ethical theories to real situations and to end in solutions, not just judgments.
Where students lose points in ETH-5900
Marks go on treating cultural difference as proof that ethics is relative, retelling cases instead of analyzing them, applying frameworks without judging how well they fit and recommending vague remedies such as more ethics training.
